The WPIAL has taken a multiple-choice approach to its conference football rosters for the 2022 and 2023 seasons as Aliquippa’s ranking is undecided.
Aliquippa’s class won’t be determined until after next week’s hearing with the PIAA, so the WPIAL board on Tuesday approved two roster options for Class 5A, 4A and 3A football. with slight differences between them.
Aliquippa’s hearing is January 26.
The WPIAL has decided not to merge classes 6A and 5A into one combined classification. As a result, WPIAL Class 6A will have a five-team seeding with four conference games each.
A majority of Class 5A schools opposed a possible merger, said WPIAL executive director Amy Scheuneman, who surveyed member schools earlier this month.
The WPIAL has approved updated rosters for all fall sports. The league hopes to release fall schedules in early February once Aliquippa’s status is determined.
This story will be updated.
