KUCHING: St. Joseph’s Private School in Kuching hosted a PMS Bible Knowledge Online Seminar on May 13, which was attended by over 300 participants from over 110 schools across Malaysia.

The seminar aimed to familiarize students with the new exam format for the SPM subject of Biblical Knowledge, in order to be in line with the new KSSM curriculum. Kurikulum Standard Sekolah Menengah (KSSM) was launched five years ago and reached SPM level this year, 2021.

Ms. Moey Yoke Lai, with over 40 years of experience teaching Bible knowledge (BK), was the guest speaker. In the past, she has formed different groups of volunteers to teach BK all over the country. She supported her passion to see young people grounded in the Word of God and to become agents of transformation in our nation.

In 2005, Ms. Moey retired as a public service school principal after serving for 32 years. She recently retired as CEO of Methodist College Kuala Lumpur.

Here are some testimonials from St Joseph’s Form 5 private school students who attended the seminar:

To start the seminar, we were presented with an introduction to Bible knowledge and why students are encouraged to approach BK as a PMS subject. Ms. Moey described BK as a privilege that has been preserved in our country by the grace of God and as an unwavering testimony to our Christian faith.

Ms. Moey then began to explain the new KSSM exam format and some sample questions and answer techniques. Compared to the previous program, a new section was introduced in our article this year, which was a HOTS question that requires us to express our own opinions and have personal implications. At first I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to cover this section well, but Ms. Moey’s detailed clarification made me feel more confident in answering questions like these.

Overall, I am grateful to have participated in this seminar as it was revealing and very insightful. Through this seminar, I was also reminded why I had decided to tackle this subject. Studying BK has really changed my perspective on the way I see things and has had a positive impact on my spiritual growth. Little by little, I was able to find the truth in the Word of God to guide me and lead me in life, so that I could be the salt and the light to glorify his name wherever I go. You too will certainly be blessed if you read and study the book of Luke and Acts with all your heart!

“But first seek the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you on top. – Matthew 6:33. All glory to God. Fayth Lee (F5PH)

I am thankful and grateful to be able to attend the SPM BK 2021 seminar which was held online due to the pandemic. This is a great opportunity for me to learn about the response techniques for the SPM BK 2021 paper which is a new format for all of us. Thanks to this webinar, I learned a lot and managed to better understand why I chose this topic which is to draw closer to the Lord because to know God better, we need to know his words.

Special thanks to Ms. Moey Yoke Lai, who is the speaker for this webinar. She shares her experiences and stories with us, which inspires me a lot not only to see BK as a subject, but also as a way to strengthen my own faith in the Lord. Finally, what strikes me the most about this webinar is the line, “ Lord, this world is yours and I belong to you. Give me the strength to study your word through BK! Cassandra Chua (F5TH)

On May 13, 2021, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Ms. Moey Yoke Lai, retired CEO of Methodist College Kuala Lumpur, developed and presented a session on SPM BK 2021 via ZOOM and YouTube. The seminar attracted over 300 students from over 100 schools across Malaysia. The principal of St Joseph’s private school, Father Francis Lim, SJ gave his opening address expressing his thanks to Ms. Moey, the teacher coordinator Mr. Benedict Lo and student MC Irwin Fong. He concluded with a prayer.

Ms. Moey started her first session around 10:20 am by first expressing her thanks to the organizing committee and her team of teachers who helped build the SPM BK video lessons. The session included an introduction to Bible knowledge, student questions and answers, and an introduction to the new 2021 BK SPM exam paper format. Session 1 ended around 11:20 am with a 5-minute toilet break.

In Session 2, Ms. Moey gave a more in-depth explanation of the BK SPM exam paper which included techniques for answering context and essay questions. Examples were given and explained in detail, which greatly benefited the students. After that, Ms. Moey answered further questions from participants. Session 2 ended around 12:40 p.m. Father Francis gave his closing address and ended with a prayer. A feedback form was then sent to participants.

Ms. Moey was indeed a very passionate and experienced teacher. Its content was clear and direct. I was very excited and eager to learn his techniques for answering questions and it was well worth the time. It was excellent for less than 150 minutes, filled with abundant information, the Q&A covered a lot of good stuff and the presence of Ms. Moey herself was a great gift. Bliss Lam (F5TH)

On May 13, 2021, Form 4 and 5 students at our school had the chance to attend a Bible Knowledge Seminar organized by Father Francis and Mr. Benedict Lo, with Ms. Moey Yoke Lai as guest speaker . Having taught BK for over 40 years, she was particularly familiar with this subject and indeed, through the seminary sessions, we were able to feel her deep understanding of Luke and Acts as well as her passion for teaching this subject.

It started with testimonials from students who took the BK in SPM. It was eye-opening to hear about the experiences of others, including their struggles as well as their personal and spiritual growth, and the joy they found in studying BK. The next part of the seminar focused on the format of the SPM exam. I found his introduction to the format, especially the new HOTS question, very helpful. Before that I felt pretty lost and confused with this new format and to make matters worse we hadn’t passed the correct exam paper yet. Fortunately, his detailed explanations gave us a full rundown of what to expect and focus on while studying.

Another useful session was the question-and-answer period where many participants eagerly asked questions. She responded to them patiently, providing detailed and comprehensive explanations. It helped dispel a lot of our doubts and clarify any issues we were having. In addition to that, Ms. Moey, with her experience in evaluating BK, also gave us tips for better grading and studying.

Most importantly, she was inspiring and showed us a different perspective on the subject. Like many other BK students, I have always viewed it as a stressful subject that required a lot of memorization. It takes a lot of self-discipline to read and memorize passage after passage and chapter after chapter. However, as she explained the reasons for taking BK, I felt like I suddenly understood what it meant to take this topic. Contrary to what was only an academic subject, she reminded us that we are in fact reading the word of the living God which we should practice in our daily lives. It motivated me to take this opportunity to study BK properly and to treat the learned values as something that I will take with myself even after leaving school.

Overall, the seminar was really useful and fruitful. We left with a grateful, more motivated and confident heart to study BK. Eunice Wong (F5PH)

I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to hear Ms. Moey speak at the seminar. Not only did she clearly break down the new format for us, but she also took an interest in response techniques and organization. Honestly, I was quite intimidated by the 13 point questions she showed us. I was already worried about how I would approach the subject because I don’t know how to memorize too much. However, she showed us how to approach the issues using context clues and noting key points. Although I was still a little scared, I gained a little more confidence from the testimonials she read to us, about how some people have been able to overcome obstacles and achieve great results. Even so, in the end, results are not everything. All in all, it was an excellent seminar which gave me many tips for Bible knowledge. Max Ng
