SEC football 2022: 5 conference games to watch

The college football season is approaching and excitement is building for some major SEC matchups set to take place during the 2022 season.

Some games feature common opponents, while others are cross-division matchups that could impact SEC standings. Teams such as Alabama and Georgia are the favorites to win their respective divisions, but Arkansas, Tennessee and Texas A&M are each set to fight for those spots. Expect big things to happen when new managers, star transfers and bitter rivals meet on the pitch.

Here are five important SEC games to watch ahead of the 2022 season.

5. Florida vs. LSU

LSU and Florida are in a unique situation: Both teams signed new head coaches shortly after the end of the 2021 season. Brian Kelly left a talented football program at Notre Dame to join the Tigers, while Billy Napier is getting the biggest break of his young career with the Gators. The mid-season game between the respected programs will give both teams a taste of their development throughout the season and what they need to do to end the year on a high.

4. Ole Miss vs. Mississippi State

The Egg Bowl always ends up being somewhat important, and not just because it’s a bitter rivalry. Whether it’s a chance to appear in a bowling game or a higher position in SEC West, there’s always something else at stake for the Bulldogs and Rebels. Given that both teams are expected to have good seasons, the year-end game could be huge depending on the rankings and post-season potential of both teams.

3. Arkansas vs. South Carolina

There has been a lot of speculation surrounding Arkansas and South Carolina this offseason. Luckily for both teams, they can open SEC play against each other in the second week of the season. The Razorbacks are expected to finish among the best in the SEC after finishing their 2021 campaign with a 9-4 record. On the other hand, South Carolina added highly touted transfer quarterback Spencer Rattler to the roster this offseason, and many have high expectations for him. The game will set the stage early for both teams.

2. Georgia vs. Tennessee

Georgia heads into the 2022 season as the defending national champion, and Tennessee will likely be their toughest SEC East opponent. The Bulldogs lost quite a few defensemen in the 2022 NFL Draft and will face star quarterback Hendon Hooker and the Volunteers. It will only be the eighth game of the season for both teams, but it could decide which team claims the coveted top spot in the SEC East.

1. Alabama vs. Texas A&M

Is this finally the year of Texas A&M? Will Alabama slowly start to fall apart in the 2022 season? When the two teams face off in early October, some of those questions might find an answer. Not to mention, Alabama will be playing with a chip on their shoulder after last season’s 41-38 loss to the Aggies.
