SDCC: AEW’s Darby Allin on when he realized pairing up with Sting would work, historic match with CM Punk

Author’s Note: The following interview clips of Darby Allin were excerpted from a panel discussion with other journalists. This transcript has been edited for clarity and to include only 411 questions and answers.

During San Diego Comic-Con 2022, 411mania was on hand for a series of roundtable interviews with the AEW stars present for last Saturday’s AEW: Heroes & Villains panel during Comic-Con International. During the round tables, we were able to exchange with the star of AEW and former champion of TNT, Darby Allin. Allin has recently been embroiled in an ongoing feud with the House of Black, and the band’s Brody King recently targeted Allin in public encounters and fan signings.

With that in mind, we wondered if Darby Allin was concerned about another potential sneak attack this past weekend at Comic-Con. However, this only made Darby Allin more suspicious of you. Here’s what Darby Allin had to say when we sat down to talk to him:

Jeffrey Harris: You’re here at Comic-Con, San Diego Comic-Con. Comic-Con International. What does it do?

Darby Allin: He feels good. This is the biggest Comic-Con, isn’t it? It’s the good one. Yeah, it’s my first time here. It’s awesome. I didn’t have enough time to explore the surroundings. Like I said, I looked at that IMBD boat over there, that yacht, and I just want to jump. I want to jump and do something. I try to jump on it, but the county won’t let me.

Jeffrey Harris: Now, are you worried since Brody King came after you and targeted you at these public events where you meet and greet fans? Are you worried that Brody King will come out during the panel and try to take one from you?

Darby Allin: Is he here?

Jeffrey Harris: I don’t know. I did not hear –

Darby Allin: Have you seen him?

Jeffrey Harris: I haven’t seen it.

Darby Allin: Are you trying to tell me something, that I should watch my back?

Jeffrey Harris: You should watch your back because he comes after you in these things.

Darby Allin: I’m just gonna stop posting where I am online. I had this meet and greet where I was promoting my clothing company, Hoodlum, which is now in Zoomies and all. I was there a few weeks ago, and all of a sudden I was timed aside and passed a table. Then he just disappeared into the fucking food court!

Jeffrey Harris: I’m just saying everyone knows you’re going to be at your Heroes your Villains panel today at Comic-Con. He could walk out through the crowd –

Darby Allin: Are you gonna be there?

Jeffrey Harris: I will be there.

Darby Allin: Are you going to do something if he does? Go on.

Jeffrey Harris: This guy is a walking tank! What am I going to do?!

Darby Allin: You guys are going to be my security.

Jeffrey Harris: Can we bring in Sting to help us?

Darby Allin: It won’t happen now. His eyes are all messed up and stuff. You watched Wednesday, he got spat in the face.

Jeffrey Harris: When Sting came to AEW and you started interacting with him, I was skeptical about the possibility of a partnership with you two. Were you skeptical at all, and when did you realize you had something together and it was going to be okay?

Darby Allin: The first day we talked. You know, honestly, I didn’t know what the plan was, and I didn’t know if they knew what the plan was. So the moment we got together, and the moment we really started to really talk and spit out ideas, that’s when we knew this was going to be something special. So it’s just a matter of showing it to the fans. And when we had the cinematic match at Revolution, you know, I don’t care what anybody says, it was the best cinematic match ever. Like, we were going there, and then by the time we – he made his live debut in front of a crowd at AEW Double or Nothing, people thought he was never going to – you know, after his neck injury in 2015 – nobody ever thought he was going to come back. And then he would like to play live in front of the public and have confidence with me, and he came to see me after the match [and said], “I couldn’t have done this without you”, and I feel like all the skeptics, all the people who didn’t believe we weren’t – you name a ****er mother who would fit in with Sting in AEW. I do not see it.

Jeffrey Harris: Did you ever realize that when you fought CM Punk in his first match in nearly eight years, you were in the history books? No one can ever take that away from you.

Darby Allin: Yeah, that one only did it because the year he quit wrestling was the year I started wrestling, and then at that time I really like to stop and come back to it. Damn, man. I was homeless like working as a dishwasher and that really settled in like how far I’ve come in those seven years and I liked putting things into perspective so it felt like that moment mad about life. That day, I was so focused on the laser because I was like, ‘Everybody’s gonna watch this game, and everybody’s gonna be like, ‘Yo! How will Punk be after seven years?!’ And then they’ll become people, like the first time they see Darby. I was really focused on the laser and I was ready to kill it.

Jeffrey Harris: That match wasn’t even a year ago, but people are going to celebrate that match between you two. It was a classic.

Darby Allin: It was a great stepping stone and a lot of validation for my hard work
that I put in with wrestling and all the sacrifices we made in AEW and everything like that. Honestly, I want to go there and you know, we had a wrestling match. It was fun.

Jeffrey Harris: Are you Brody King next, or do you want to pursue Wardlow and become TNT Champion again, or do you want to pursue Jon Moxley again? Because I think you have Moxley’s number, and I think you’re a future world champion.

Darby Allin: I want to finish what I had with Brody. I’m not going to leave it
guy choked me and beat me twice.

Jeffrey Harris: I just hope he doesn’t try to sneak up on you today.

Darby Allin: You keep saying that! I don’t know about this guy *waves at me*. What are you doing here man? He says that.

Jeffrey Harris: Go to Greensboro Coliseum, team up with Sting and CM Punk. It was really special. How did you live this experience?

Darby Allin: It was really fun. Like I remember, and I remember like it was a crazy night. Main event, six-man tag. It was the first time people saw us all together, like me, Sting and Punk in the ring as a team. And you know, I would like to do more.

Unfortunately, Darby Allin was the victim of a sneak attack by Malakai Black and House of Black’s Brody King at the end of the AEW Heroes & Villains panel at Comic-Con. I assure Darby Allin and the powers of being in AEW that I and everyone else at 411mania had nothing to do with this heinous attack (see below).
