Schuylkill Fall Sports Teams Take PSUAC All-Conference Honors

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa .– The Penn State Schuylkill women’s soccer and volleyball teams have garnered impressive honors from the Pennsylvania State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) All-Conference teams announced this month. The awards, nominated by each campus and voted on by coaches and athletic administrators, recognize outstanding achievement on the field or on the field during the regular season. In addition, the PSUAC awards the John Fritz Sportsmanship Award to an outstanding student-athlete from each conference team.

Women’s football wins PSUAC honors

This year, Penn State Schuylkill’s women’s football took top conference honors. First-year student-athlete Ariana Trautz of Reading took home Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year honors. Trautz enjoyed an outstanding first season as Lady Lion, scoring 24 league-leading goals, including four winners. She also had four hat tricks – scoring three or more goals in a single game – during the season.

Zoe Gannon of Mohrsville, also a first-year student-athlete, was named Defensive Player of the Year. Gannon not only displayed exceptional defensive skills, but she also scored four goals (including two game-winners) during the regular season.

And Jon Hummel, in his first year as a head coach, was named coach of the year.

In addition, the women’s soccer team won six of the 21 spots on the All-Conference team:

The Penn State Schuylkill women’s football team returned from a 2019 1-9 season (the 2020 season has been canceled due to COVID-19 mitigation efforts) to earn a spot in the 2021 PSUAC Championship game In addition, this team excelled with only 13 team members, including 10 first year student-athletes. Their success against teams with more experience and deeper benches is a testament to how uniquely the Penn State Schuylkill 2021 women’s football team is.

Women’s volleyball wins PSUAC championship spot

The 2021 Penn State Schuylkill women’s volleyball team were able to defend their 2019 PSUAC Eastern Division title, despite the fact that there was only one returning member of that championship team. The arrival of fourth-year transfer student Maddy Felty helped this team of mostly first-year athletes compete for the championship final.

Felty was also named to the PSUAC first team as center hitter, posting strong defensive and offensive numbers during the regular season. The only returning player of the 2019 season, Jontae Martin won the PSUAC John Fritz Sportsmanship Award.
