Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday inaugurated the AYUSH Global Investment and Innovation Summit at the Mahatma Mandir in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Mauritian Prime Minister Pravind Kumar Jugnauth and World Health Organization Director General Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus were also present at the event.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Jugnauth said India is known as the pharmacy of the world. He said India will also become the leader in AYUSH, Ayurveda and traditional medicine.
Speaking on the occasion, the Director General of the World Health Organization, Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus said that India will go worldwide and the whole world will come to India through AYUSH. He said the growth of the AYUSH sector is significant. He said the Ayush industry has grown 17% annually since 2014 and is expected to reach $23 billion by the end of this year.
The three-day AYUSH Global Investment and Innovation Summit will feature 5 plenary sessions, 8 panel discussions, 6 workshops and 2 symposia. Around 90 prominent speakers and 100 exhibitors will also attend the summit. The summit will help uncover investment potential and kick-start innovation, research and development, the start-up ecosystem and the wellness industry. It will help bring industry leaders, academics and scholars together and serve as a platform for future collaborations.
Prime Minister Modi also said that the opportunities for investment and innovation in the field of AYUSH are limitless. “We are already seeing unprecedented growth in the production of AYUSH drugs, supplements and cosmetics. He said that the AYUSH sector was less than $3 billion in 2014, which has now exceeded $18 billion”.
Furthermore, Prime Minister Modi said that traditional medicine has helped increase tourism in Kerala. This power is all over India, in every corner of India. He said “Heal in India” can become a big brand in this decade. Wellness centers based on Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, etc. can be very popular.
Modi said the FSSAI also announced a new category named “AYUSH Aahar” in its regulations last week. This will facilitate the producers of herbal nutritional supplements. He said it is very important that farmers involved in the production of medicinal plants have the ability to easily connect to the market. For this, the government is also working on the modernization and expansion of the AYUSH electronic marketplace.
The Prime Minister said it was the era of unicorns in India. In 2022 itself, so far, 14 Indian start-ups have joined the Unicorn Club. I’m sure there will be unicorns coming out of our AYUSH start-ups very soon.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Union Minister for AYUSH Sarbananda Sonowal, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya were present at the ceremony.
