The Government of the Republic of Palau, in collaboration with the United States, will host the seventh Our Ocean Conference in Koror, Palau, from April 13-14, 2022. The conference began as an initiative of the United States Department of State to attract public international attention to the serious threats facing the global ocean and to engage in concrete actions around the world to support marine conservation and sustainable development.
The theme of the Our Ocean 2022 conference is “Our Ocean, Our People, Our Prosperity”. Our Ocean 2022 focuses on two important cross-cutting issues: the ocean-climate nexus and the importance of a healthy ocean for small island developing states and all communities where the ocean is the main source of livelihood. As the first Small Island Developing State to host the Our Ocean conference, Palau will highlight the specific challenges the islands are facing due to the ocean-climate crisis.
The President’s Special Envoy for Climate, John Kerry, will co-host the Our Ocean 2022 conference with the President of Palau, Surangel Whipps, Jr. A U.S. interagency delegation will participate in the 2022 conference, along with U.S. society representatives civil and industrial.
The hallmark of the 2022 conference will be the announcement of new voluntary commitments for meaningful and meaningful action on some of the most complex issues facing the ocean today.
There will be six main areas of action:
- Facing the climate crisis
- Advancing Sustainable Fisheries
- Fostering sustainable blue economies
- Promotion of marine protected areas
- Support maritime security
- Marine Pollution Control
