After setting a target of US $ 100 million for local diamonds, Botswana has already managed to exceed this margin thanks to a single online auction.
Botswana noted mixed results at the ongoing World Expo dubbed Expo 2020 Dubai, with local artwork recording low sales while diamonds recording impressive sales.
Held in the United Arab Emirates and starting in October, Botswana has garnered nearly P86,000 in sales of leather goods, works of art and jewelry.
Despite a slow start in art sales over the two-month period, Botswana managed to make a massive sale of local diamonds worth US $ 110 million through an auction.
According to the Managing Director of Botswana Investments and Trade Center, Keletsositse Olebile, the Botswana flag’s bestsellers mainly include recycled paper pencils, canes, tiny mask key chains as well as eggshell bracelets. ostrich.
“Sales started off on a lower note, so people aren’t getting used to the products just yet, but they choose almost every day through word of mouth and people new to our lodge. It is not only a question of presenting these products, but of guaranteeing them markets ”, explained Olebile.
According to Olebile, all the works of art currently on display at the exhibition were purchased from ordinary Batswana by the Ministry of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Cultural Development for a value of P900,000.
Having set a target of US $ 100 million for local diamonds, Botswana has already managed to exceed that margin with just one online auction.
“The highlight of October remains the diamond auction where we essentially spent a day viewing our rough diamonds to generate interest. We managed to sell US $ 110 million, they tell us it’s rare to sell that much in a typical diamond auction and go over US $ 100 million in one scoop, ”Olebile said.
With October being devoted to mining, mining processes, jewelry and fashion, November activities included a showcase of Botswana innovations and inventions.
December is all about arts and crafts while January and February will feature showcases of Botswanan food and tourism experiences.
With over 190 countries at the exhibition, Botswana is sure to benefit a lot from the value proposition sector roundtables and trade and investment conference on March 13, 2022 on what is dubbed Botswana’s National Day. .
“At the end of the festivities, there will be another 12 months when the organizers and the United Arab Emirates will give us the opportunity to showcase our innovative small and micro enterprises to cultivate their access to the Arab market,” Olebile said.
