Leaderboards, sleepers, customizable cheat sheet, ADP analysis and everything in between – The Athletic

When we launched the Fantasy Baseball section in 2019 we had an overarching theme pushing everything we do – make this kit worth the price of Athleticism all alone. Our goal was to blow everyone away with deeper, smarter, and more interesting information and advice, while constantly responding to suggestions and comments and reacting to what people wanted.

Last year, for example, we brought in Greg Jewett – whose reliever work is extraordinary in its depth and precision – and Ian Kahn – whose dynasty advice and title track record is breathtaking – to tackle a few domains that subscribers were asking for more. We have also called on Michael Waterloo for his expertise on points leagues, in order to meet the growing appetite for this format; and retired MLB pitcher Joel Piñeiro for perspective on the game he played, but from the perspective of a successful fantasy (football) player (all four are back this season). Joining them in this year’s draft kit are two new writers we’re excited to introduce:

Jean Laghezza, known on Twitter as the “MLB Moving Averages,” is back. If you haven’t read it when he was with us for the 2020 pre-season… well… we don’t know how to explain his unique brand of analysis (“if Eno was a vampire who just drank a pot of ‘espresso’?) beyond, “it’s great, just read it.” It has quirky and refreshing lines of thought, it leans into numbers like few others do, and it’s guaranteed, “wow that made me think of some things” read every time.

Mike Kurland is someone you will love, especially when spring training begins. Calling him a “range guru” does him a disservice, but he first caught our attention when he shared range analysis Google docs on Twitter and reddit. You might think spring training doesn’t matter, and in that case, you’d be wrong. Mike picks up on trends and changes that 99% of us don’t, and it turns into fantastic actionable advice. His work last year identified some gems at the end of March, including Cedric Mullins.

What you see below is a live and ever-expanding draft kit – we’ll have over 100 columns at the start of the games, with everything from staples (rankings) to tools (the customizable cheat sheet) to originals that thought-provoking (start to Laghezza’s ADP volatility hypothesis, if you dare).

We hope you enjoy this year’s kit, we encourage you to leave comments or questions in the columns, and we wish you the best of luck as we enter the draft season – however long it may be!
