Congressman Al Green hosts press conference on gun violence prevention

HOUSTON – Congressman Al Green hosts a press conference on preventing gun violence on Tuesday.

The press conference should take place at 10 a.m. KPRC 2 will broadcast the event live.

“We cannot continue to ignore the current gun violence crisis in the United States. It is ravaging our country, causing unimaginable heartbreak to countless families,” Congressman Green said in a press release.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in 2020 Texas had the most gun-related deaths of the 50 states with 4,146 fatalities.

Green said he would support the following legislative priorities:

  • Require a waiting period before purchasing a weapon with some exceptions.

  • The ban on bump stocks.

  • The repeal of special immunity from liability laws enjoyed by the firearms industry.

  • Require a license before purchasing a firearm with training to include anger management and dispute resolution, as well as safe storage methods.

  • Funding for a national summer jobs program for youth with a conflict resolution and anger management component.

  • Fully funded gun violence prevention research through the CDC.

  • Closed the “gun show loophole” that allows a person to buy a gun from an unlicensed seller at a gun show without a background check.

“Influential people with the power to shape public opinion, such as chambers of commerce, need to make their position clear to politicians to help shape political opinion,” Green said. “It is our collective responsibility to adopt solutions that help save lives. It’s not just about politics, it’s about the life and death of our children.
