SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) – Those at Vera House are turning World Elder Abuse Awareness Day into a week-long event. They run seminars until June to help protect our loved ones.

Loren Ulrich, Prevention and Awareness Coordinator for the Vera House Abus in Later Life team, says that with the recent crime targeting our older neighbors, it couldn’t come at a better time.

Ulrich thinks we can all learn something from them 24th Annual Elder Abuse Conference.

“Aging is something that concerns us all. We are all in a different place on this path, ”she said.

As we age, we all become vulnerable to things like financial abuse, neglect, and isolation, which are the biggest risk factor for abuse later in life.

“We know he [isolation] certainly plays into some of the truly tragic events that we have seen here in our community.

She refers to the murder of Eva Fuld and the gruesome death of Connie Touri.

“It really is up to all of us to create a community in which we can all age with justice and dignity,” said Ulrich.

Ulrich thinks it starts with understanding social norms and how they fuel violence.

We see ideas that older people are underestimated, seen as unnecessary, or seen as not contributing valuable to our community.

The conference hopes to change that by supporting our most vulnerable with seminars on housing rights, drug addiction and personal care.

“It really is such a huge problem that we have to work as a community to tackle it,” Ulrich said.

The seminars run until June 28. If you cannot attend a session, they will be posted on the Vera House website.
