A 4-day seminar on peace support operations organized by the Nigerian army has opened in Abuja. The seminar, themed “Nigeria in the Contemporary Peace Support Operations Environment”, aims to deepen collaborations between the Nigerian military, sister services and security agencies with a view to improving the operational.
Hosted by the Army Headquarters Department of Operations, the seminar serves as an effort of the Nigerian Army to keep participants abreast of current events in the field of peace support operations.
Declaring the seminar open, the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), Lt. Gen. Farouk Yahaya, called the seminar timely, saying it comes at a time when the contemporary operations environment is increasingly complex, ambiguous and unstable.
He said that given the current security situations in the country, “Our operations must therefore be joint and multi-agency in scope to harness the combined skills of all to achieve the desired end states.”
General Yahaya said: “This seminar is characteristic of the noble efforts of another Nigerian army to deepen collaborations with sister services and other security agencies to improve our skills.
“As we all know, today’s operating environment is increasingly complex, ambiguous and unstable. Our operations must therefore be joint and multi-agency in order to harness the combined skills of all to achieve the desired end states.
“It is in this light and in accordance with the cardinal pillars of professionalism and cooperation which are essential to my vision that a seminar of this nature becomes imperative.”

While reiterating the Nigerian Army’s commitment to improving Nigeria’s position as a force to be reckoned with in peace support operations, COAS said that “this seminar aims to enhance synergy and collaboration with all security agencies involved in such operations.Thus, the idea behind organizing this seminar in Abuja is to facilitate easy access for all security agencies in order to enhance participation”.
He charged the participants to make useful contributions to achieve the objective of the seminar.
Speaking on Nigeria’s participation in peace support operations dating back to the 1960s, with notable achievements and commendations that have contributed to regional and global stability and peace under the auspices of the Economic Community of States of West Africa, the African Union and the United Nations, he said. Nigeria has contributed to more than 40 peace support operations in Africa and around the world, as part of efforts to facilitate the restoration of peace in conflict areas.
He said that “the theme of the seminar, which is ‘Nigeria in the contemporary environment of peace support operations’, is very appropriate as it addresses the imperative of balancing Nigeria’s contributions to peace support operations. support for peace vis-à-vis other forms of homeland security challenges that plague our dear country.
The seminar taking place at the Army War College Nigeria brought together serving and retired military officers, Army Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Faruk Yahaya, former commanders of the forces of United Nations Peacekeeping in Liberia, participants from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police, Paramilitary among other participants.
