Ardmore blacksmith’s workshop forges generosity after family were struck by tragedy

ARDMORE, Okla. (KXII) – Residents of Sherwood Shores are still feeling the effects of the tornado two weeks ago.

Texoma hobby blacksmith Justin White raises money for his family by auctioning off handmade knives.

“It’s already so hard for people to live anyway without medical care, the economy is just killing people,” White said. “So pensioners, they need a little help.”

White said his aunt and uncle were waiting in hospital for open-heart surgery to save his life when they lost everything in the Sherwood Shores tornado.

“On top of that, she couldn’t get the heart surgery in time, so she ended up moving on,” White said. “So now, not only does my uncle have to pay the hospital bills, he has to deal with being homeless now, and he has to pay for a funeral.”

Hoping to help ease that burden, White used his hobby of hand forging knives to raise funds.

He auctioned off four knives, a meat cleaver, and an experiment with himself as a teacher for two people to learn how to forge.

“There’s a lot that goes into making things, so you know each knife probably takes 6 to 8 hours to make,” White said. “So I took a whole week off so I could do this and try to fundraise.”

White said he wasn’t sure how to value them, so he started with the cost of materials.

“And it just skyrocketed. I think we’re up to $2500 right now.

Moved by her generosity, Facebook friends responded to the auction.

“It’s my family today, but it could be someone else tomorrow,” White said. “Because you know, this stuff happens all the time and it really made me realize how many people showed up in the community at this auction. It’s definitely an eye opener.

White’s auction ended at six on Sunday, but if you want to see more of his work, you can follow him here.
